Bears lose tight battle with Spring Hill

By Aric Mawdesley

CLEVELAND, Ga. (TMCSports) -- The Truett McConnell men's soccer team could not hang on in a tightly contested match with Spring Hill College Sept. 30 because of a red card against the Bears early in the first half. Despite playing one man short, the Bears played great defense until late in the second half when Spring Hill took the lead. The Bears' persevered with great defense and a valiant offensive effort, too, with several shots on goal that came close to tying the game. The Bears fell, however, 1 to 0.

TMC soccer teams share Gospel in Costa Rica

By Scott Sienkiewicz

CLEVELAND, Ga. (TMCNews) Truett-McConnell's men's and women's soccer teams traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica, last August for a week-long mission trip. The teams worked with SCORE International, a missions organization focused on sharing the Gospel through sports.nestor cameron joy (left to right) Nestor Flores, Cameron Garner, and Joy Smith play soccer with local children from an impoverished neighborhood in Costa Rica.

While in Costa Rica, the student-athletes from Cleveland,  Ga., played in games with local colleges and held soccer  clinics at local schools. Afterward, TMC students shared  their faith among those with whom they competed.

"I got to spend about five minutes telling the guys my  story,"  said TMC goalkeeper and student Wesley Lutz, who  also  told about how he became a Christian and  "about my  life as  a Christian now."

The students also ministered in some of the San Jose's  most impoverished neighborhoods, playing soccer with  children in the streets. "The street -- it was all they had," said Chalice Price of the women's soccer team. "They didn't have a field, but they didn't care. They didn't need the field."

The children were glad to receive soccer balls, jerseys and sports bags as gifts from TMC students. "It was really life changing for some of us," Lutz said, "because it was the first time that we really got to spend time with kids who were way less fortunate."

"Sports gives you that common ground, something to start the conversation with," Price continued. "Then you can lead up to why you play, which for most of us is to give God glory. He has given us the ability and so we want to utilize that for him. So that is just the doorway. Being able to relate (Christ) to what people are already into. It makes them more receptive."

Lutz echoed Price's comments regarding soccer's ability to provide  "the team the platform to share Christ wherever they play, and to  share their individual stories even with their opponents in the U.S.  Each of our stories is different. There are some stories, such as  mine, where I grew up in a Christian home, to where some have  grown up in broken homes." God deals with all people no matter their background, Lutz concluded.

"My hope in taking the teams on this trip was to help them see that sports is really only a means to an end," Head TMC Soccer Coach David McDowell said.

McDowell believes the purpose of TMC's soccer program is more than winning games: "The result of a game bears no weight when compared to where a person stands in relation to Jesus Christ," he said. "We found that soccer is a great platform presenting Christ to the world."

TMC Men’s soccer blanks Johnson & Wales in season’s first victory

By Aric Mawdesley

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (TMCSports) --

Truett McConnell's men's soccer team posted its first victory for the season and did so emphatically: a 4-0 shutout win on the road against Johnson & Wales University.

Coach David McDowell was impressed with the team's ability to come back and put together the shutout victory only one day after a tough loss on the road at Northwood University. Both Johnson & Wales and Northwood Universities are in West Palm Beach, Fla.

The Bears came into the Johnson & Wales game looking to make a step forward, and McDowell thought the win accomplished that and also established some needed momentum going into next week for the start of conference play. Leading TMC in goals was Mickey Guerrero. Jamie Coals and Renato Delgado each netted a goal.

The Bears hit the road next weekend, playing Auburn University/Montgomery, Ala., on the 23rd and Faulkner University, also in Montgomery, the 24th.

TMC Bears fall to Bryan Lions

CLEVELAND, Ga. (TMCSports) Looking for the first win of the season, the men's soccer team of Truett-McConnell College faced off against 10th ranked Bryan College at home Sept. 10. Tension filled the air as both teams started the game with something to prove. Bryan proved it first with a goal after having a foul plagued first half. The game's intensity kicked up in the second half as each team struggled to maintain its cool. But the yellow and red cards flashed anyway. During the fray, Bryan scored another goal after which both defenses clamped down, thus ending the game, 2-0, Bryan College.

The Truett Bears drop to 0-4 on the season with their next game Sept. 17 at Norwood University, West Palm Beach, Fla.

Bears to take on #10 Lions

By Kevin Barnes

CLEVELAND, Ga. (TMCSports) After an 0 - 3 start to the season, including an on-the-road loss to Bluefield College last weekend, TMC's men's soccer team faces a tough opponent this weekend, Sept. 10, at home, as they host the Bryan College Lions, 2 - 0.

Ranked 10th in the NAIA, Bryan comes off a 2 - 0 win over Trevecca Nazarene. Nevertheless, the Bears' Junior Forward Angel Granados said he and his teammates "are focusing on building better team chemistry, putting the effort in, and hopefully will come out with a win this Saturday."

Game time is set for the Bear Den at 5:00 PM.
