Andretti Loyd was named the best Freshman Player in the SSAC Conference at the conference post-season banquet in Montgomery, Alabama. Only one player receives the award out of the 14 member colleges and universities which cover the Southeastern United States. Loyd averaged 13.7 points on the season while shooting 42% from the 3 point line. He also shot 80% from the free-throw line on the year and averaged right at 5 rebounds per game as well. Andretti played high school ball at Covenant Academy in Macon, GA.
Loyd was humbled by the award and gracious in his response. "I was thankful for the opportunity to play and showcase my abilities this season. I thought I had a chance to win this award after the season I had but I was trying not to get my hopes to high. There are a lot of great players in SSAC," he said. "It helped me so much to have coaches who push me to my potential on a daily basis, and teammates who encourage me to be the best I can be."
His head coach, Wade Mawdesley was proud of Loyds award as well. "This is a huge honor for Andretti. He has really worked hard to improve his game and it has paid off. To have the coaches in the SSAC choose to honor him in this way says a lot about the kind of player he has been for us this year," Mawdesley said.
Loyd and the rest of the TMC Bears team will be in action for one more chance to extend their season in the NCCAA Regional Tournament. The tournament begins Thursday March 7th at Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs GA.
