Joy Smith keeps the pressure on the defense in the first half of Satursday game
Women's Soccer - Wed, Aug. 22, 2012

For a team with mostly newcomers coming into this season today was a game of discovering what kind of team they are capable of being together.

Coach David McDowell was pleased with his young teams start to the season.  "Today was a great start for us.  We started 5 freshmen and their team was mostly upperclassmen.  We were concerned about how we would perform and we really started well."

The Lady Bears were led in scoring by Freshmen Mallory Reynolds who scored the first goal of the game on a solid shot mishandled by the goal keeper.  Shelby Stanfield secured the game with a goal in the second half that put the game out of reach of the visiting Lions for good.

"Shelby  and Mallory really played well in midfield.  Joy Smith also did a great job of keeping the pressure on the defense in the middle which really helped us down the stretch" McDowell said.

Coach McDowell felt like a strong preseason schedule has paid off early for his team.  "This is the first year we played 3 preseason games.  I think the third game really helped out our new players and our returners begin to gel and we are seeing that played out on the field.

The Lady Bears will be in action again on Saturday August 25 in Dayton, TN against the Lions of Bryan College.
